Sofia-Plovdiv railway line is part of the Trans-European railway network and its modernisation is among the priority projects of the Operational Programme on Transport.
Modernisation of Sofia-Plovdiv railway line will provide a link to the project “Doubling and electrification of the railway line Plovdiv-Svilengrad – borders with the Republic of Turkey and the Republic of Greece”, which is an ongoing project.
The project will also contribute to the implementation of a number of international agreements and initiatives:
- Trans-European Networks (TEN);
- European Agreement on Main International Railway Lines (AGC);
- European Agreement on Important International Combined Transport Lines (AGTC);
- Trans-European Railway (ТЕR).
Sofia-Plovdiv railway line is part of the first main high speed railway line Kalotina West – Sofia – Plovdiv – Svilengrad – borders with the Republic of Turkey and the Republic of Greece. Sofia-Plovdiv section is double electrified, with a normal track gauge of 1,435 mm and a total length of 156 km.
