Implementation period: 01.2015-12.2015
The project is based on the revised policy for the construction of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and aims to improve intermodality in the south-eastern region of the EU, by creating conditions for optimal interaction and integration of different modes of transport and improving the quality of freight transport services provided. The project implementation is expected to enable the efficient transportation of large volumes of freight from the Black Sea to Central Europe and EU trade hubs. The implementation is also aimed at meeting the expected new challenges for the Bulgarian transport system due to the forecasted significant increase in traffic between Turkey and Ukraine/Russia on the one hand and the EU on the other, as well as in freight volumes in general.
The city of Ruse is located at km 489 of the Danube River and thanks to its unique geostrategic location is a key intermodal point. The city is an important commercial, industrial and transport centre. It is situated on the Bulgarian-Romanian border, along Trans-European Corridors VII and X. Port of Ruse is the largest Bulgarian river port. Ruse railway station is connected to the main Black Sea port – Varna via Ruse – Varna railway line, which is an exceptional prerequisite for the development of intermodal transport.
